Which help desks host your help centre in a subfolder?
Which help desks support a folder on your own website? Compare the documented options, five person costs and the work your team will own.
A help centre at example.com/help can give customers a familiar address alongside your product pages. The important buying question is who keeps that address working. “Custom domain” does not necessarily mean a vendor supports a folder on your existing website.
For a small SaaS team with someone who can manage a proxy rule, HelpDesky is a low subscription cost option: Pro includes unlimited seats, articles and conversations for one workspace at $5 monthly. It also includes the help centre, widget, contact form, ticket centre and shared inbox. AI provider usage and any infrastructure costs remain separate.
Which tools support a help centre subfolder?
Here is a five person team comparison, checked on 2 November 2026. Each person needs to work in the support inbox. Prices are USD base subscriptions, using regular monthly billing. These products have different capabilities; the table does not price an identical complete service.
| Plan | Folder hosting | Monthly rate and five person total | HelpDesky base subscription difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| HelpDesky Pro | Yes, through your proxy; headless also available | $5 per workspace; $5 total | Reference price |
| chat.sh Pro | Yes, advertised on its plans | $99 per workspace, five inbox users; $99 total | $94 less, about 95% |
| Intercom Essential | Yes, with your server or CDN configuration | $39 per full seat × 5; $195 total | $190 less, about 97% |
| Zendesk Suite Team | Not through standard host mapping; subdomain supported | $69 per agent × 5; $345 total | $340 less, about 99% |
These are base subscription differences, not total bill savings. The calculation is the competitor’s five person total minus $5, divided by that competitor total, rounded to a whole percentage. It excludes AI, taxes, optional extras, proxy hosting and development time.
Intercom currently displays a new customer Essential offer of $29 per seat on monthly billing: $145 for five people, alongside its regular $195 total. Its published offer terms say the discount continues while subscribed. HelpDesky’s current pricing page shows $5 Pro without a temporary promotional code.
Annual commitments are different: chat.sh Pro is $990 yearly, equivalent to $82.50 monthly; Intercom Essential lists $29 per seat monthly equivalent before its new customer annual offer; Zendesk Suite Team lists $55 per agent monthly equivalent. For five people, those last two regular annual totals are $1,740 and $3,300 respectively. Do not compare an annual equivalent with a monthly contract without labelling it.
Why these tiers? chat.sh Starter covers three inbox users, so its cheaper headline price does not cover this team; Pro includes 5,000 pages and 5,000 AI credits monthly. Extra 1,000 credit packs are $20.
Intercom Essential includes a public help centre; private or multilingual help centres require Advanced. Fin usage starts at $0.99 per outcome, with other usage and optional extras charged separately.
Zendesk Suite Team includes a knowledge base; Support Team’s cheaper ticketing price is not the package used here. Zendesk AI resolutions and consumption beyond applicable allowances can add charges.
Does a subfolder help your SEO?
Google’s crawling and indexing FAQ says it has no preference between subfolders and subdomains for indexing and ranking. It recommends choosing the arrangement that is easiest to organise and manage. A folder is therefore not a ranking upgrade you can buy with a help desk subscription.
There can still be practical reasons to choose one. Your team might want all customer facing addresses under the same hostname, or a predictable place for help links in product navigation. Those are design and maintenance benefits. A shared address does not automatically merge analytics, produce one sitemap or give every page the same navigation.
Google’s short video below explains the choice and the value of keeping a stable structure. It dates from 2017; use the current FAQ above for today’s guidance, rather than treating older Search Console details as setup instructions.
What does each vendor actually support?
HelpDesky: The subfolder hosting documentation describes a proxy rule that forwards your chosen folder to HelpDesky. HelpDesky renders the pages, with your colours and logo. It offers a separate headless route if you want your own templates. Both options are included on Free and Pro.
Intercom: Its Help Center domain guide explicitly supports subpaths such as www.example.com/support. Your infrastructure must match the path to its origin. The custom domain documentation gives a CDN example and says each custom domain supports one subpath. Budget for that configuration as well as seats.
chat.sh: Its public product and pricing page offers a help centre in a folder on your site, with custom domain or subfolder access across its listed plans. Ask for the exact deployment requirements on your hosting platform before buying. The advertised feature establishes availability, not a guarantee that every website builder accepts the necessary routing.
Zendesk: Its host mapping guide explicitly excludes mapping to a subdirectory of an external site. A branded subdomain remains an option. Do not assume an unsupported proxy workaround has the same support commitment as its documented configuration.
Who should own the routing?
Consider a team whose marketing site is managed entirely through a website builder. If nobody can configure the web server or CDN, a folder requirement may introduce a new infrastructure project. A supported subdomain may be easier to maintain and still serve customers well.
HelpDesky’s subfolder guide describes its proxy route as unsuitable for hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and WordPress.com. Treat that as a limit of the documented approach. Have your developer confirm compatibility with your actual hosting arrangement before choosing a plan.
For a team with its own website deployment, the work may fit an existing maintenance routine. Still assign an owner. A routing rule can be small while the responsibility for monitoring it lasts for years.
Do you need a subfolder or your own page design?
These are separate requirements. A hosted help centre can appear under /help while retaining the vendor’s page layout. If your requirement is the same navigation, search and templates as the rest of your site, evaluate headless delivery instead.
HelpDesky’s headless hosting option supplies content through an API while your website renders the pages. Your team owns the surrounding search, navigation, sitemap entries and missing page responses. That control is useful when it solves a real design need; it also creates work beyond the subscription.

What if your articles already have another address?
HelpDesky documents a setup check before activation, then permanent redirects from its previous custom subdomain to the new folder, with public links and canonical references updated. That documented move does not prove compatibility with every legacy URL from another vendor.
Before changing an established library, use our help desk migration buying checklist to agree who controls the old addresses and test representative paths. Google’s site move guidance warns that rankings can fluctuate as pages are recrawled. No hosting choice removes that uncertainty.
How should a small team choose?
Shortlist on support needs first, then check hosting. If HelpDesky’s support tools fit and you can maintain the proxy, its $5 Pro workspace keeps the base subscription low as the team grows. If you need a competitor’s specific routing, reporting or enterprise controls, confirm the appropriate tier before treating a cheaper subscription as a replacement.
HelpDesky Free can test the workflow with unlimited seats, 15 articles and 15 conversations per month in one workspace. Pro removes those article and conversation limits. AI uses your own provider key, giving you a choice among supported providers and models and visibility into a separate usage bill. Check whether your provider’s budget controls stop requests or merely alert you before relying on a spending cap.
Bring three sample articles and your intended public address to the evaluation. Confirm that customers can find an answer and reach your team when it is insufficient. Our documentation discovery guide covers the ongoing content and access checks that remain useful whichever hosting route you choose.
Frequently asked questions
Is a subfolder always better for help centre SEO?
No. Google states no indexing or ranking preference between subfolders and subdomains. Choose a supported arrangement your team can maintain, with accessible pages and useful content.
Can Zendesk host my help centre under /help?
Its standard host mapping does not support an external site’s subdirectory. It supports a branded subdomain instead. Get explicit vendor confirmation before relying on a different architecture.
Does Intercom support a help centre subpath?
Yes. Its documentation supports a subpath with your server or CDN configured to forward requests correctly. This requires infrastructure work beyond selecting a help centre address.
Does HelpDesky require Pro for subfolder hosting?
No. The current pricing page includes custom domain, subfolder and headless options on both Free and Pro. Free’s article and conversation limits still apply.
Does a subfolder give the help centre my website’s design?
Not automatically. HelpDesky’s proxy mode retains its hosted template with your branding. Its headless option lets your website supply the templates and surrounding navigation.
Will moving to a subfolder preserve every ranking?
No provider can establish that from the URL structure alone. Check redirects, canonical references and working destination pages, then monitor the move. Search performance can fluctuate during a URL change.
