How it works

  1. Enter your help center URL

The home page of your docs or help center on any platform. A bare domain works too; we add https:// for you.

  2. We sample the site like a crawler

Home page, robots.txt, llms.txt and the sitemap first, then up to 12 article pages and 20 links, all within 25 seconds. No JavaScript is run.

  3. Fix what the scorecard flags

Five category scores, every check with pass, warn or fail, a one-line reason, the fix and up to five affected URLs.

Frequently asked questions

What does a good help center score on?

Five things. Discoverability: an XML sitemap, a robots.txt that allows the docs, an llms.txt file, canonical tags, no stray noindex directives and HTTPS. Content quality: unique titles, meta descriptions, exactly one H1 per page, articles with enough text to answer a question and content that is present in the server HTML. Structure: a search box and category links on the home page, breadcrumbs and Article, FAQPage, HowTo or BreadcrumbList structured data on articles. Freshness: lastmod and dateModified dates with few articles older than a year. Technical: a mobile viewport tag, no broken links, a short redirect chain and small HTML documents.

Why does server-side rendering matter for AI answers?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and most AI crawlers read the raw HTML a server returns and do not run JavaScript. A help center that draws its articles client-side sends them an empty shell, so your documentation cannot be quoted or cited in AI answers and is indexed late or not at all by search engines. The audit flags pages whose main content is missing from the server response.

How often should help articles be updated?

Review every article at least once a year and whenever the feature it describes changes. The audit reads the lastmod dates in your sitemap and the dateModified values in article structured data and reports how many pages are older than 12 months, plus the newest and oldest dates. If neither is published, freshness is reported as unknown and left out of the overall score.

Which pages does the audit look at?

It loads the home page, robots.txt, llms.txt and the sitemap, then samples up to 12 article pages spread across the sitemap order and checks up to 20 links found on those pages. Everything runs with a 25-second limit; when a site is slow the audit returns what it has and marks the result as partial instead of failing. The results state how many pages were sampled out of how many the sitemap lists.

What if my help center has no sitemap?

The audit still runs: it loads the home page and follows the article links it finds there, up to the same sample size, and the Discoverability card tells you the sitemap is missing. Publishing a sitemap with a lastmod date per URL is usually the first fix, because it is how search engines and AI crawlers find new and updated articles.

Is the knowledge base audit free?

Yes. Guests can run 2 audits per day without an account and a free Helpdesky account removes the limit. There is no credit card and nothing is stored: the report lives in your browser tab. Public help centers and docs sites over http or https work; private networks, localhost and unusual ports are refused.
